[KB146] Uninstallers (removal tools) for common Windows antivirus software


The steps below show how to remove or uninstall your McAfee software from a PC running Windows using the standard Windows removal steps. If you have a problem with removal, you might have to run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool (MCPR). The steps for the MCPR tool are also shown below. For information on how to remove the GFI WebMonitor agent follow the steps below: Locate Add/remove programs from the Control panel Uninstall GFI WebMonitor Agent; Navigate and delete the C: Program Files (x86) GFI WebMonitor Agent folder; Open Regedit and Locate the follow registry keys and delete them.

Remove previous Antivirus software!

It is important that any previously installed antivirus software is uninstalled from your system before installing your ESET product. Typical uninstallation* using the Windows removal tool (Add/Remove Programs) is often insufficient. The links below are for removing antivirus products installed on your system prior to the installation of ESET. ESET AV Remover tool

The ESET AV Remover tool will remove almost any antivirus software previously installed on your system. Click the appropriate link below to download ESET AV Remover, we recommend that you save the file to your Desktop. If you don't know which version to use, click here for instructions to find your system specifications:

If unsuccessful, or unable to identify the program installed, the tool will direct you back to the alphabetical list of uninstallers below.

List of manual antivirus uninstallers

  1. Click the link associated with the antivirus software currently installed on your system and follow the prompts or instructions on the website.
  2. Once uninstallation is complete, you will need to restart your computer. You may then proceed with installing your ESET product.

What if I can't find the program I want to remove?

If you don't see the program that you need to uninstall in the list below, follow these steps to remove your program:

  1. Start your computer in Safe mode.
  2. Press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard, type appwiz.cpl and then click OK.
  3. Select the program you want to remove from the list and click Uninstall/Remove.

Removing the VIPRE Business Site Service and stopping Polipo:

  1. Stop the VIPRE Business Site Service
  2. Open an Administrative Command Prompt and run the command (quotes included):
    • (Version 5 & Later): sc delete 'VIPRE Business Service'
    • (Version 4 & Earlier): sc delete 'Sunbelt Software Enterprise Service'
  3. Open the Task Manager, open Processes (Tab), and End 'Polipo' if it's present

Removing the VIPRE Business Registry Keys:

  1. Open RegEdit.exe and delete the following keys: (Not all keys will be present)

    • HKLM SOFTWARE Wow6432Node VIPRE Business

    • HKLM SOFTWARE GFI Software VIPRE Business
    • HKLM SOFTWARE Sunbelt Software Enterprise
    • HKLM SOFTWARE Wow6432Node GFI LNSS10

    • HKLM SOFTWARE Wow6432Node GFI Software VIPRE Business
    • HKLM SOFTWARE Wow6432Node Sunbelt Software Enterprise

  2. Remove any keys referencing 'VIPRE Business' or 'VIPRE Enterprise' from the following:
    • HKLM SOFTWARE Wow6432Node Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Uninstall
    • HKLM SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Uninstall
    • HKCR Installer Products
    • HKCR Installer Features

Removing the remaining VIPRE Business folders:

Delete any of the following folders present:
